I attended a conference recently which provided a great catered lunch. During lunch we were treated to a keynote speech by a professional speaker.

The topic was Branding.

As a business owner, I’m always interested in marketing tips. Bring it!

The speaker was clearly a pro. The talk was well-rehearsed, the jokes familiar and timed, and he understood the use of his space. (Have I been around performers too long or what? ha)

I was in.

…until he spent the last 20 minutes talking about how to be a good husband, wife and parent.

I know. I KNOW!!!

Being accountable to your partners and children IS good branding.

I fully agree.

But that 20 minutes was wasted on me.

I do not have a husband nor do I have children (this is NOT an advertisement. 😉 )

It was the 4th conference this year I’ve attended where marriage counseling broke out in the middle of business.

(Again, I get it. I’m not complaining. I’m a minority.)

YET,  as I sat there looking around to occupy myself during this all-too-familiar portion, I noticed something I’ve never noticed before:

I WASN’T THE ONLY ONE!

This was the first time I didn’t feel isolated during the marriage and family portion.

So today, I just want to give a SHOUT OUT to all my other ‘independents’ out there who have to mentally check out while the Partnered Parents get their ongoing advice…

…no matter how busy you are, make time for your spouse.

…unplug from social media when you’re having family time.

… don’t skip your kid’s ball game.

…etc.

YOU, my friend, are NOT alone. 🙂
