I had an interesting conversation with a server in Georgia last week. She was telling me about how she was hoping to get into a certain line of work, and while she had completed the training, she still needed some money for fees and such.

Now, listen.

I can tell when someone needs a hiney-kicking. It’s certainly not always my place to step in, but when it is, it just is.

Standing before me was a lovely, educated, sparkling young woman who needed a a quick lesson in getting what she wants.

Enter ME!

Me: So how much do you need?

Her: Well, around $185.

Me: How can you come up with that amount?

Her: I don’t know. I mean, I have to pay rent and just keep up with my living expenses.

Me: Have you had a yard sale?

Her: No.

Me: Do you have stuff to get rid of?

Her: Well, yeah, I guess I do.

Me: Could you offer to do a spring cleaning of someone’s house for $100?

Her: I hadn’t thought of that.

Me: Do you have friends? Family? A church where you could put up flyers?

Her: Well, yes.

Me: Girl, you have $185 right now. You just haven’t gone and got it.

Hiney-Kick Complete

I’m rooting for that young woman today…and she’d better not be working at that restaurant the next time I pass through. 😉

…and, yes, I fully believe the [unconscious] resistance to finding $185 has nothing to do with the money.

But that’s a post for another day.
